"Architect Mike DeVries grabbed this rugged site by the shoulders and shook loose 18 distinctive challenges in a rough-and-tumble layout. DeVries used the exposed granite here in every way possible – as jagged hazards alongside the fairways and as aiming points behind greens. Views of Lake Superior greet you on the first tee, and everything that follows – from the approach on the 579-yard par-5 first to the forested, downhill, saddle-shaped 18th fairway – lives up the lake’s name. DeVries accomplished a minor miracle in routing such a variety of holes on a such a difficult site, and you’ll tip your hard hat to his labors." “On my exclusive Yikes-meter scale of 1 to 10, this course starts as an 11.
. . . Greywalls is neither predictable nor linear. It has native wild plants and fescues that give an old world feel. And it brings golfers to the edge and back while demanding they maintain a hold of their golf senses.
. . . This is a course that will generate strong, passionate responses – pro and con. If that’s the price of bold, creative design, it’s certainly worth paying, more so when compared with what passes for safe, commercial work these days.” Bradley S. Klein, Golfweek, April 23, 2005

”The ballots need not be sent out, let the writers take a year off, the course of the year in 2004 will be awarded to Greywalls GC, designed by Mike DeVries. Fresh off his remarkable work at Pilgrims Run, Diamond Springs and The Kingsley Club in Traverse City, Mike has been holed up in the north country building what may become the most awe inspiring course this state has seen. The course will be soon be mentioned in the same breath with Bay Harbor, Arcadia Bluffs and the Gailes for its unique design.
. . . According to Marc Gilmore, head professional at Marquette since 1983, Mike was the winner out of 20 golf architects that indicated an interest in the project. His work was the last the building committee looked at, and when they pulled into The Kingsley Club for an inspection, they told Marc, this is what we have been looking for.” Excerpt from MICHIGAN GOLF NEWS-September 26, 2003 VOL. 3, No. 36 by Art McCafferty-Publisher-Michigan Golfer Magazine
